Use Soundflower to enable volume control for external monitor

2018-08-16

Background

I just bought a new monitor with built-in speaker. While I connect my macbook with it, the volume control function of macOS is disabled. The monitor will output sound at a maximum volume, which, of course we don’t want..

Solution

Use Soundflower, an extension that allows applications to pass audio to other applications. We can hook the HDMI port to Soundflower and use Soundflower as the output device on macOS. Volume control works now.

Installation

The easiest way to install this extension is with brew cask.

brew cask install soundflower soundflowerbed

Usage

  1. Open Soundflowerbed (will appear on menubar), select an output device for a channel.
  2. On sound dropdown menu, select the channel that we set up at step 1.
  3. Ready to go!
